DESCRIPTION:“What is Black Art?” Join us for our premiere exhibition at the Eaton DC\, featuring artwork by 19 Black artists on this topic.\n\n\nJOIN US: Join us for the one-night premiere of BlkArthouse’s Juneteenth exhibition\, featuring artwork by 19 Black artists from around the world. The event will take place on June 25 and feature a cash bar and a night of social gathering and mingling in celebration of Black art and artists.\n\n\n\nWho We Are: BlkArthouse is a social enterprise that aims to increase the accessibility of art and representation of Black artists in the global art market. We support over 170 Black artists world-wide and advocate for broad investment in Black art.  \n“What is Black Art?”  \nFollowing the murder of George Floyd and last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests\, the demand for “Black art” skyrocketed as masses of people were looking for ways to meaningfully support Black communities. The  interest in “Black art\,” however\, begs the question of what “Black art” entails. Is it focused on “Black” subjects and subject-matter\, or is it any art by a Black artist? Black artists in particular have grappled with this question as they aim to capture this demand of “Black Art” while trying to avoid pigeon-holing themselves into a certain category of art\, especially one that may fall into a trope of Black trauma and pain. \nThis exhibition aims to start a broader dialogue about what entails “Black art\,” what perspectives we project onto art by Black artists\, and how Black artists  identify themselves and their artwork.  \nAbout the Opening Night Event:  \nThe event will be hosted at the Eaton Hotel DC\, a dynamic hotel focused on the progress of Black culture and humanity\, in their Workshop. All guests will need to check-in upon entering and will be expected to wear masks for the duration of the event. The timeline of the night is as follows:  \n\n7:30-8:00: Arrival/Check-In\n\n\n8:15: Remarks \n\n\n8:45-9:30: Art Exhibition Premiere\n\n\n9:30: Wrap-Up\n\nThere will be cash-bar and areas to safely co-mingle. Dress code is semi-formal or cocktail attire.  \nThe Rest of the Exhibition:  \nAfter the opening premiere event\, the exhibition will be free and available to the public for walk-ins for the remainder of the weekend (until Sunday June 27th). After June 27th\, the exhibition will be available at the Eaton DC (unaccompanied) or by appointment until July 9.
