Carla Hall Just Brought Her Southern Roots Back to DC with bumblebirds

The beloved Top Chef star is back in the restaurant game after nearly a decade. The buzz is real. The verdict? Still forming.

After nearly a decade away from the restaurant world, Carla Hall has officially made her return to the DMV. Today, bumblebirds opens its doors at 303 Pennsylvania Ave. SE on Capitol Hill, and Washington has been watching since the moment it was announced.

The question is no longer whether people will show up. They will. The real question is whether bumblebirds can go from a “try it once” moment to a DC staple.

Southern Comfort with a Point of View

Hall partnered with the Mendelsohn family at Sunnyside Restaurant Group, the DC institution behind Good Stuff Eatery and We, The Pizza, to bring bumblebirds to life in the very space Good Stuff occupied for 18 years. The menu is anchored by recipes from Hall’s grandmother, whom she calls “the culinary matriarch of my family.”

The chicken is the star. Birds are dry brined with powdered vinegar before frying, giving you acid flavor built into the meat without heavy breading. Lighter, crispier, and built for repeat visits. Standout sandwiches include The OG Bumble with black pepper ranch slaw, pickles, and cheese, and the Blue and Buffalo layered with creamy blue cheese and spicy buffalo sauce. Sides, biscuits, pimento cheese boards, and Duck Camp doughnuts round it all out.

The drink program, led by DC-based mixologist Andra “AJ” Johnson, brings real craft to the sip side with Southern-inspired cocktails and a customizable iced tea and lemonade bar sweetened with pure cane sugar.

Built for the Neighborhood — and the Camera

The space is bright and intentional, anchored by a custom mural and hand-crafted paper quilt art made by Hall herself. It is the first time her textile work has been publicly displayed, and it sets a vibe that is warm, personal, and very postable.

That visual identity is already working. Before today’s official opening, Instagram reels and TikTok first-looks were already circulating across DC food culture. The brand is loud in the best way.

The Verdict Is Yours to Make

The opening buzz is real and the brand identity is strong — but the best review is always your own. Hall put it simply: “We want bumblebirds to feel like your happiest detour, something you didn’t know you needed until the first bite. Come hungry, leave smiling.”

Today is day one. Go find out for yourself.

bumblebirds is open now at 303 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. Hours are Sunday through Wednesday 11am to 10pm, Thursday through Saturday 11am to 11pm. Dine-in, takeout, and delivery via Uber Eats.
