Colin Kaepernick Brings AI Storytelling to Prince George’s County Classrooms

Colin Kaepernick is continuing his commitment to empowering the next generation, this time by helping Prince George’s County high school students sharpen their voices through artificial intelligence, WTOP News reports. Prince George’s County Public Schools recently showcased Lumi Story, an AI-powered storytelling platform backed by Kaepernick, during a demonstration at Largo High School as part of the district’s growing investment in future-ready technology.

Designed to boost literacy and support academic growth, Lumi Story gives students new ways to bring their ideas to life through character development and narrative building. For students who think creatively but may struggle with traditional writing, the platform is already making an impact.

“I think it is a very creative program for someone who’s like an out-of-the-box thinker or doesn’t like putting their ideas on paper,” said Nina Anderson, a Largo High School student who has been using Lumi for the past few weeks. “I think it is a very creative way for people to use technology, especially creating their ideas and bringing those characters to life.”

One of the biggest challenges facing AI tools in education has been equity, particularly when it comes to voice recognition errors that disproportionately affect non white students. Kaepernick said Lumi Story was built with that issue in mind.

“We support over 50 languages on the platform, so we have seen students on the platform that are creating in Haitian Creole, that are creating in Japanese, that are creating in Thai and Arabic,” Kaepernick said. “We are making sure that we are supporting our students in every way possible.”

Interim Superintendent Shawn Joseph described the program as “culturally responsive” and expressed confidence in what students will gain from the experience.

“We feel really good about what our students will be able to produce as a result of it,” said Joseph.

Joseph also emphasized that teachers will receive training and ongoing support as the district expands the use of Lumi Story across more schools, positioning AI as a practical classroom tool rather than a replacement for educators.

“This is one of many tools that we’ll be putting in the hands of both teachers and students. It’s important for us to be more efficient, more effective,” Joseph said. “AI is becoming the new word processing. It’ll be a tool that everybody just uses to get what they need to get done, done. And we want to make sure that our kids are equipped with using those tools effectively.”

Transparency has also been a key part of the platform’s design, allowing teachers and administrators to remain closely involved in how students use the technology.

“Teachers have full transparency on the platform,” Kaepernick said. “I think that’s one of the things that teachers, districts and parents have really appreciated. When students are using AI, every prompt, every question, every engagement, teachers and administrators have full visibility into.”

For Prince George’s County, this investment is about more than technology. It is about preparing students for a rapidly changing future.

“The digital divide no longer is about access to devices, it’s about access to emerging skills,” Joseph said. “The partnership positions our children to step boldly into careers in storytelling, media, technology, computer science and broader digital economies.”

As classrooms evolve, initiatives like this one show how innovation, equity, and creativity can work together to open doors and help young people tell their stories on their own terms.
