Threads Said What We Were Thinking: This Week’s Funniest Takes on Money, Love & Being Tired

Black Twitter didn’t die. It moved. And anybody who’s been on Threads in the last six months knows the family reunion has officially relocated. The jokes are sharper, the discourse is messier, and somebody’s auntie keeps quote-replying with the entire backstory of a man you’ve never met.

We’ve been scrolling so you don’t have to. Here’s what had the timeline in a chokehold this week, sorted by the only categories that matter.

Money

The economy is theming again. The “back to budgeting” era is officially in. Grocery prices are up. Layoffs are still trending. The girls are bringing back the cash envelope system like it’s 2014, and somebody on Threads said “if you don’t see me out, the rent is winning.” It’s funny because it’s true. It’s true because the rent is, in fact, winning.

The Spirit Airlines obituary tour. You never flew Spirit. You swore you wouldn’t. The yellow plane was a personality flaw. But now that they’re done, suddenly everybody has a Spirit story. The time the seat didn’t recline. The carry-on that cost more than the ticket. The flight attendant who said “ma’am” in a tone. We’re mourning a plane we hated. That’s the most Black thing of all time.

The “I’m not buying it” girlies. A whole movement of women on Threads quoting things they refuse to spend money on this year. Erewhon smoothies. The Stanley cup with the new color. Anything Brandy Melville-adjacent. $18 cocktails that come in a thimble. The peer pressure is officially flipping. Frugal is the flex.

Love

“Date Cancelled” is still going. Last week MVEMNT covered the trend. This week it grew teeth. The reasons women are canceling dates before showing up are getting specific. The Instagram with no friends in it. The man who said “I’m a simple guy” (a confession, not a flex). The suspicious lack of a beard line. The texting style that suggests he’s typing with one finger. The bar is on the floor. The lioness is stepping over it.

The “are we boyfriend and girlfriend” discourse. Someone posted “if you have to ask, you’re not” and the timeline split clean in half. Half saying clarity is a green flag. Half saying that’s how women end up in three-year situationships with a man named Tyler who introduces them as “my friend” at the function. Both sides are right. That’s the problem.

Couples who go to therapy together: a new love language. The discourse moved from “therapy is necessary” to “therapy is the new fifth date.” If he doesn’t know what attachment style is, are you sure? If she calls everyone a narcissist, are you sure? The girls are vetting now. The boys are catching up.

Being Tired

“I’m in my villain era” is officially retired. We were never villains. We were tired. We were underpaid. We were sending one (1) clarifying email and being called aggressive. The new era? “I’m in my unbothered era.” No more performing the rage. Just a quiet “noted” and a calendar invite for the meeting you’re now declining.

Black women and the rest economy. Threads is full of Black women openly talking about doing absolutely nothing on the weekend and refusing to apologize for it. No brunch. No baby shower. No “we should link.” The bed is the destination. The candle is lit. The phone is on Do Not Disturb. The girls are resting resting.

The Sunday scaries got rebranded. Somebody called it “the Sunday surrender” and now we can’t unsee it. Not anxiety. Not dread. Just a slow, deeply Black acceptance that Monday is coming and there’s nothing to be done about it but season the chicken for the week.

That’s the week. Threads is undefeated. Black women are tired but funny about it. The economy is still doing whatever it’s doing.

We’ll be back next week with whatever the timeline cooks up. Follow MVEMNT on socials so you don’t miss the receipts.
